Making a magazine

In the winter of 2019, I was chosen as the Creative Director of North by Northwestern magazine. I led a team of 6 designers and 2 photographers to create our final product.

What did this magazine take?

Other than A LOT of time in InDesign, I led:

  • 3 Indesign & design workshops for new and experienced designers

  • 1 all day photo shoot (which happened in my very small apartment)

  • A lot of coordination and encouragement

  • Many conversations about having two photo features and making the staff believe in the power of visual stories.

In the end, we were able to create something beautiful and important that told stories that sometimes don’t get placed in magazines. Working and managing a staff was much more work than I expected, as was giving meaningful design feedback. This opportunity was one of the most formative in my time in college – it made me all the more passionate and adamant that telling good & beautiful stories matters.
